Optimized hard disk the standard Windows way.
Windows has the suitable tools on board - right click the icon of your hard disk that you want to check and select ‘Properties’ from the menu.
In the ‘Tools’ tab, click the ‘Check Now’ button under the ‘Error Checking’ area (For XP user, you must log on with administrator rights for the purposes, Vista verifies this with its User Account Control prompts).
Activate the ‘Automatically fix file system errors’ and ‘Scan for and attempt recovery of bad sectors’ options in the subsequent dialog box. Then click ‘Start’.
Windows will check the disks only if they are not being used. If this requirement is not fulfilled, Windows offers to start the check on booting the system the next time. Accept the ‘Schedule the disk check’ option in this case.

In the first place she is not a technology savvy person and in the second place she never uses her laptop for any other things than academic research and actual writing of her papers.
